Our Story

Adinkra Stories was founded in 2020 with the purpose of celebrating the evocative Ghanaian tradition of storytelling through its use of symbolic aphorisms. Fusing together the rich, cultural history of the Akan people and contemporary jewellery practices, the Adinkra symbols have been beautifully crafted into timeless gold and sterling silver jewellery pieces, each denoting a symbol that is close to the brand’s heart.

After having spent the best part of 2019 in Accra and Akropong, Ghanaian British Founder Michael Mensah, like the rest of the world, was suddenly confined to his London home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was impossible not to notice the Adinkra symbols scattered across his home; gifts and mementos of trips gone by to the Homeland. Having always been fascinated by jewellery and the social dialogue it creates around identity, he used this time to re-discover the community building symbols within his Ghanaian heritage, and what started out as a research project turned into an initial six piece symbol collection.

Whether they are worn together or as a mix of symbols, this buildable collection heralds the past while ushering it firmly into the present.
